Perminate Link for eBay Sellers Scrutinize Buy.com Listings   eBay Sellers Scrutinize Buy.com Listings

Participants in an eBay Discussion Board are buzzing about Buy.com's listings on eBay. The link comes courtesy of a reader who emailed AuctionBytes, "Some of the responders stated that Buy was selling odd items such as item number 170226285862. That particular listing was for single AA Battery at the Buy It Now price of $7.99 with $6.98 shipping. Someone else found another auction from Buy that only had NEW listed as the title. There was apparently nothing added in the description, making it essentially a blank auction."

The reader continued, "I looked further into this, and found that Buy had hundreds of 'nothing' listings in the Home & Garden> Inside the Home> Home Décor & Accents category. Ebay is allowing them to list for free, and this is no doubt helping with eBay's numbers. Here are a few examples of the item numbers showing this: 170226110668, 180250485355, 180250485335, 150255470716, 170226110664. Take note that the quantity listed in these auctions is in the hundreds."

The special attention to Buy.com comes after it was discovered by blogger Randy Smythe - and later confirmed by eBay - that the auction site had entered into a special deal with the retailer. eBay had long told sellers the platform would always be a "level playing field" - in 2000, a deal between eBay and Disney created an uproar, a story relayed in Adam Cohen's book about eBay, "The Perfect Store." Cohen quotes former eBay CEO Meg Whitman saying, "We've concluded that eBay has to be a level playing field. That is the core part of our DNA, and it has to be a part of it going forward."

Sellers are also feeling pressured by recent eBay changes that advantage high-preforming sellers in search, and many are wary of competing with large entities like Buy.com.

A single AA battery from Buy.com on eBay - $7.99

Shipping a single AA battery to a chump who was looking for a ''great buyer experience'' on eBay - $6.98

Watching eBay tank for allowing such stupidity in the name of special deals with big sellers and inflating listing numbers - Priceless.

Inflating listings ostensibly for the purposes of influencing stock prices and/or affecting Wall Street analysis is a clear violation of SEC regulations and  carry prison sentences if convicted.

I can think of no greater pleasure than see the Donna Hoe, et. al. all marched out their San Hosed palace and incarcerated for a very, very, very long time.

I saw something about this on another blog.  WTH are these blank listings, placeholders?

Odd, since they're not being updated to include a product before they expire - like this one.  170226110668

The buy.com SKU (204736145) mentioned on the eBay listing also returns a  blank page.

Very strange.

Google the SKU 204736145 you will see it is a toastmaster item on "buys" website.

Ina,

Lars is right about the battery ad.  It's for a single pack of eight, not a single battery.  You may want to update the post with a correction.

However, for the price+shipping, one would be a fool to buy it from buy.com on eBay unless the buyer was in some remote area which made it more cost effective to pay for shipping.  Most of us could go to the local hardware shop or drug store, find it for the same price (or less), and make our money go twice as far than if we spent it on eBay with buy.com.

But what buyer would actually go to google to search a buy.com SKU?

What's the point of having blank screens on eBay throughout the entire listing term, if not to simply jack the count up?

It's not strange Q2 reports are coming up they are pulling an Enron- betting they can pull off their absurd new eBay plan and avoid the decline in stock that will occur - that is all ready beginning.

So who else is saving pages like mad right now, and if your not what are you waiting for?

if you can't reach the product through eBay it is a false listing.  Does not matter if you can google it- you have to be able to ebay it

At what point will the Securities and Exchange Commission look into eBay?

Let the investigation begin!!!

What does it take for the Securities and Exchange Commission to begin an investigation into the deceptive practices currently taking place at eBay?

It has already been deleted by Crookbay.

eBay is listing buy.com items, they have a special arrangement. Obviously this is an automated process. Obviously eBay is importing a data stream from buy.com.

The old phrase rings true: ''garbage in, garbage out.'' Obviously buy.com has a few data entry errors here that show up as blank listings on their OWN site, it is not surprising that when imported, they are still blank.

Get a grip and calm down people.

Pad them listings!  Crunch and manipulate them numbers!....end result - yet another good looking quarter LOL  Its all smoke and mirrors folks and it has been since Donahoe and his gang of merrymen started messing with the inner workings and turning the site into mush!  Sooner or later it has to come to light!  I'm sitting back waiting.  I may yet get a picture of the ebay suits lined up and applying for unemployment (I can still dream, can't I?)

The minuscule error with the battery, in no way discounts all the padding, fake listings and the ending of tens of thousands auctions, just to relist them.

@RicRoe

It takes an honest securities commission which we don't have and won't if we continue our march toward fascist corporate rule by electing the servants of corporations, Republicans.

It wouldn't hurt to begin the snail mail complaints now.

@Concerned Citizen aka Concerned ebay executive?

If I were an ebay executive,I'd be hiring an attorney right now so that when the ax falls, I might be able to cut a deal with the incoming Democrat controlled Justice Department and stay out of prison.

"Obviously this is an automated process. Obviously eBay is importing a data stream from buy.com."

And "obviously" you don't understand what the "obvious" purpose is behind all of this "obvious" deception. Or perhaps you approve of deceptive practices.
