A number of eBay affiliates reported they were kicked out of the program last week, and they were not pleased. Now it seems that some of the people eBay paid handsomely to drive traffic to the site may be inclined to use their skills to do just the opposite.

An angry member of the program wrote on a discussion board, "I have 130,000 blog readers that are going to get an earful of anti Ebay for the next ten years or so this is my new pet project."

Another replied, "Me too. I will stay glued to this board to see what crap they have to say. I am a very experience blogger myself with 95000 readers and growing. I am prepared to do some damage if need be."

eBay brought the affiliate program in-house on April 1, 2008, renaming it the eBay Partner Network. On August 1st, eBay announced its intention to move to a "Value Based Pricing" system later in the year.

"Sometime in Q4 (and before we migrate existing publishers to the new system), publishers will be given quality rating data at the campaign level, but will continue receive compensation based upon the old pricing structure." (Link.)

One affiliate said he believed eBay was removing affiliates that competed with eBay on search results. "I have been able to optimize my pages to rank in 1st thru 9th position most of the time ahead of eBay on organic searches. So, like paid searches eBay does not want to pay us on traffic they believe they can get themselves."

An eBay moderator posted a thread and explained that the actions were part of eBay's continued effort to focus on delivering the highest quality buyer traffic to eBay via affiliate marketing. "... in addition to earnings per click metrics (EPC), we look at a variety of metrics to see how users are behaving when they come to eBay.com - how engaged they are with our site, and whether the affiliate link clicks lead to incremental buying activity. As we've done this, we have seen a big discrepancy in how interested and active the traffic is that comes to eBay from different sources."

I did just the opposite and booted ebay's ads off my websites.  They were getting good impressions but NOBODY was clicking on them!  I'll stick with Google Adsense.  I've received plenty of nice checks from them in the past few years. No more Ebay ads for me - nobody hitches a ride on my bandwidth without paying ;-)

Why send traffic to ebay in the first place?

And anyone who uses Google AdSense really needs to put ebay on their blocked advertiser list through the AdSense content filter.

Perhaps you should all  take a more adult attitude.  Your issues with eBay have started because they no longer want you on their site. Or you feel they are gaining and you have lost something.  Why not rethink your business plan as the on individual stated. Why have a vindictive attitude?  Use your precious energy to make your dreams come true and reach self-actualization.  Just my 2 cents ,,,

could this have something to do with the survey some of us took about the new pro stores set up? if these affiliates drove buisness to those stores ebay wouldnt get the higher fvf rate they were going to institute.

Revenge?

Well if these affiliates can cost ebay an amount equal or greater than what they earned there, I'd call that a form of revenge.

If they can drive traffic to ebay competitors, that could be considered  revenge too.  Maybe introduce a few new people to Amazon while making money in the process?

If they are still making money they can look at it as revenge or a remodeled business plan.  However they view it, it works out as less traffic to ebay.  And that's cool.

Thereby making the seller's revenue generated for eBay negligible.  Sellers will no longer be customers, we'll just be eBay's employees who pay for the ''privilige'' of creating eBay's ad space.

Ebay: For only 35 cents you can place your item in a sea of garbage and create ad space for us for 30 days! (or until we kick you off for some ridiculous policy violation - whichever comes first).

Wow, nice corporate business model they'll have there.

And Meg is going to speak at the RNC on the subject of ''prosperity''.  As if she gave a damn about our ''prosperity'' the day she created the policy that sellers could not advertise their sites in auction listings.
Will she get up and say 'I stepped on millions of small businesses getting to the top!''  I doubt it.

eBay's business model changed the day they went public.  Meg Whitman did exactly what she hired on to do.  She grew a small company into a prosperous worldwide corporation.  If small businesses fell by the wayside, those sellers didn't have the forsight, or even the hindsight, to change their own business models for 21st Century online selling.

eBay's corporate business model is once again changing.  Will small sellers survive this time?  I only know that I won't survive if I don't diversify. I certainly don't blame Meg Whitman for my failure to change with the times.

eBay is not a reliable business partner.

Only three type of people defend eBay:
1. the clueless
2. shills
3.those that haven't been burned by there terrible business practices (YET).

I'm glad I left them. Now I sell more from my own web sites, and have a reliable business partner in Google.

Any seller with foresight will first a foremost realize that success does not include any kind of partnership with eBay.

No, the only people who defend ebay's business practices are the ones who "sell" ebay their affiliate programs and ad services. They are the parasites of the entire marketing system online EVERYWHERE. They find a niche, then they create a "perceived need" in the seller.
These folks are the present day version of the junk food and sugary cereal ads of the 60's-90's. They grew up on this garbage and they believe it is the definition of life itself.

The best sales pitch comes from the sellers themselves. They can speak with their own words and sort out what's going to work without someone inflicting  more rubbish that has to be paid for by the entire hosting community. The sooner  the auction communities understand this, the better off they will be.

Good sellers do not need the protection of a mafia type marketing company to make themselves successful. All they need is a nice clean place with an awesome search engine and 100% customer service to the seller. The seller will survive on his or her OWN customer service, and their OWN personalized marketing strategy.

Paying higher ebay fees for unused and ridiculous services all over our listings is a waste of our money.

The affiliates should have never been hired, and they shouldn't even be incorporated into the auction site to begin with.

(Alex I was being facitious, I hope you aren't offended!LOL)

eBay continues the downward spiral. if the stock is above $10 by christmas i will be shocked. a few years ago the dividends from my eBay stock allowed me to be able to be a succesful powerseller on eBay, it was a good, profitable home based business that I built from scratch and into low 6 figures. before that i was an analyst on wall street, a position i earned by helping to build another brand and corporation succesfully, so i am well aware of the inside mechanisms of eBay.  eBay needs to restructure quickly before they become the next enron. a 20% lay off across the board and replacing John Donahue would be a wise and start smart. nothing Donahue has done has been good for long term investors, he needs to go.

eBay's Affiliate program, oh, well, who are they kidding? You know a company is in trouble when it has to get affiliates to drive traffic into their site to get sign-ups. What has eBay run out of more ideas on how to keep traffic away? I get it, drive traffic into eBay through their affiliate program, so they can drive it right back through Yahoo ads - what a great circle jerk they have going on over there:-)

ebay is infested with these parasites. these so called affiliates are the "tier" structure that ebay honors as their "chosen people". The lead the conventions and conferences, and all the "live" events put on by ebay, then they market their online marketing packages to the poor unsuspecting sellers as "goods and services" sold on ebay. They cost a small fortune! The poor sellers think this will improve their sales, and in a way, it does, because ebay's affiliated advertising programs offer protection to THEIR represented sellers from all the negative issues that plague the individual, unaffiliated sellers.

That means that some sellers are privvy to using special tools that circumvent the system so that these sellers can bring their items to the tops of all pages in searches. It's no wonder the blogs by the little legal eagles are centered around the live auctions stories. It directly shows what ebay does for their "own" connections vs the ones that are independent.If you read those stories correctly, you'll get the true gist of what goes on behind closed doors.

The day the first advertising marketers  raided ebay, was the beginning of the end. These parasites will prey on the ebay membership until there is nothing but themselves left. Then ebay can be an affiliate to something else and sell affiliate marketing services to other companies.

seriously, not suprised by their actions. Whether it affects 3 or 300 people eBay owes you an explanation. of couse you can make a good living selling on ebay, affiliate or blogging about alternative to ebay. The best lesson for ebay for others is to NEVER put all your eggs in one basket. With thousands of affiliates out-there; get away from them.
