PayPal Down, Outage Affects Some eBay Transactions

Attempting to log in to PayPal results in an "Internal Server Error" message on Monday, and the outage is also affecting transactions on other sites, including eBay. There is an intermittent message on PayPal's site that reads, "We're sprucing things up right now, but we should be done by 11:20 PM PDT." The problem started at about 1:26 pm Eastern.

PayPal posted an announcement on its Systems board, "We are aware that you currently may be unable to log into your PayPal account or to complete a payment. We apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing. Please note that we are working to resolve these issues as soon as possible and will provide further updates as they become available."

eBay also posted an announcement on its board, "Some members may receive errors when trying to complete checkout with PayPal. We are aware of this issue and are actively working to resolve this as quickly as possible. We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience."

eBay's Discussion Board also began having access issues as we researched this story.

Let me see, the marketplace is sucking wind...they don't own the core technology for Skype...PayPal site can't stay up...

No problem for me. Printed postage for 35 packages without a problem. Sent invoices and money requests no problem. Even got money.

Must be paypal punishing the whiners. HAhA

Please note that we are working to resolve these issues as soon as possible......Means they have no idea what is wrong

and will provide further updates as they become available......Means as soon as we can figure out how to fix it we will let you know....LOL

We definitely saw the effects. Web Accept carts not processing (either at all or with weird results). IPN notices not being sent for 'successful' transactions. Payments not showing up in our History page.

I bought two items from two different vendors in the last hour. I always pay right away but couldn't because PayPal wasn't working. It eventually worked after trying about 5 times over about an hour.

1 hour later and the site seems to indicate you can log in, but log attempt results in "500 Internal Server Error".

I couldn't print postage. Paypal site is starting to degrade like ebay. Its all managements fault. Paypal ran relatively smooth for years and then bam, ever sice they started to move towards this new design and other changes.. just cant be relied on

Make ebay ashamed, just use the UNRELIABLE and LOSS OF CONFIDENCE statements. That'll make them sweat because people will think ebay outage all over again, millions lost in stock value! They'll get to work then and be transparent about what exactly is happening.

Outage and unreliable service is probably the only thing that you can do to get ebay to actually start providing service and communications about what is really going on.

No problem for me. Just paid for an auction.

As a side note for all the naysayers. Ebay stock is almost 22.00 a share.

FYI, as the CFO for our company, I see that we process close to 2.8 million dollars per year in ecommerce transactions through paypal (via their merchant account - not just express checkout). I will also add that we had a $19,000 ad campaign breaking TODAY. The result? We are losing TONS of money because we cannot process payments via our ecommerce site, and customers are abandoning their shopping carts as a result.

I called paypal to ask to speak with someone in upper management. Instead, I had the pleasure of speaking a minimum wage robot (yes, you know the type) who was rude and unhelpful.

I will broadly say that paypal is a lame giant. Dumb employees, and obviously dumber management. It would appear that they are so big, they could care less if they piss anyone off at all. Sigh. This sucks.

I've been trying to pay for an item for the last three hours here in Australia. Clicking on the PayPal link either times out or you get a sketchy message, repeated in many languages, saying the service is currently down but that they are working on the problem. I tell you...if my buyer's rating is affected I am going to give PayPal a royal roasting over the phone! Not happy!!!

It really is about time that Ebay&PayPal took some responsibility for this type of problem. This is the second problem I have witnessed with the PayPal site in less than a week.

For the smaller/medium businesses this affect, the inability for customers to pay and/or transfer money out of your account to your bank, really can be damaging.

I wonder if a day of free Ebay/Paypal fee's as way of an apology would ever happen....Ha ha, what am I thinking, as if.

Ebay and PayPal should be shamed for the poor level of service they currently offer, at an ever increasing price to sellers...
