The Amazon.com website went down on Friday, though other international sites are up, including Amazon Canada (http://www.amazon.ca/).
Amazon posted the following announcement on the sellers board (which is a different domain name, presumably on different servers) at 10:37 AM Pacific:
Greetings from Amazon.com,
We are currently investigating an issue that has impacted the availability of the Amazon.com website. Engineers are actively engaged in resolving this issue and we will provide an update once the issue is resolved. We appreciate your patience during this time.
Regards,
Technical Account Management
Amazon.com
Sellers began discussing it too in multiple threads on the Seller Soapbox board, one poster said the problem started for them at 12:56PM Central.
Update 6/9/08:
More troubles today (Monday), but Friday's problems called resolved. A colleague said she couldn't check her Amazon order this morning and couldn't open the Amazon.com website - between 9 and 9:30 PDT. She tried again and said she got a "Sorry" page, with a link to a substitute home page, but still could not access her account info. Amazon posted a message at 10:27 AM PST stating, "We are currently experiencing an issue that is causing site performance issues. Our engineers are actively engaged on resolving this issue and we will continue to provide updates until service has been restored."
At 11:58 AM, Amazon posted a message stating, "The aforementioned issue that was impacting the availability of the Amazon.com website on June 6th was resolved the same day at 13:30 PST."
