 A Couple of Random Thoughts from eBay Live |

Late yesterday, I stopped in at the vendor area, and a couple of things occurred to me...
1. I'm sure balancing on unicycles and juggling has something to do with security. If I had sat down and watched the show as the VeriSign people were  urging me to do, I could probably explain the connection. As it is, I can only tell you that VeriSign was displaying its Identity Protection Security Token system in the vendor area. It protects you when you sign in to PayPal or eBay, so others can't steal your account. The system is free for individuals, and VeriSign was guiding people through the signup process and handing out little security tokens. You use VeriSign's security algorithm to generate a random number every time you sign in. After entering your username and password, you are prompted to enter your random number. You push a button on the token, and one is created for you. You type this in to the PayPal or eBay login page, and you're in. What if you lose your token? I asked. You answer the usual security questions--mother's maiden name, etc.--and you can still gain access. You can also deactivate the code yourself if it seems like too much trouble.
2. As a writer, I try to create text that describes the exact event or program I'm writing about. For instance, I'm writing about eBay Live. If you turned to this blog and saw a generic article about "auction conventions" and how cool they are, you would feel let down, wouldn't you? Or maybe I'm the only one who thinks like this. The folks at IMN Sales in a Click will create generic e-newsletters that contain articles on subjects you choose. The articles aren't about you, or your particular eBay Store, or even about the exact products you sell. You might sell Liz Claiborne fragrance products, for instance. IMN will populate a newsletter for you with articles about fragrances, and send them to a list of your customers. It all seems a little scary to me, the old-fashioned writer. But that didn't prevent me from leaving my business card and telling IMN to contact me if they need any more generic content providers. (A guy's got to make a living, after all.)
