Amazon.com Traffic Surpasses eBay in October

Amazon.com traffic surpassed that of eBay for the month of October and experienced greater growth rates as well, compared to September 2009 and year-over-year. The number of unique visitors to Amazon.com was 54,492,000 in October 2009, while eBay had 50,992,000 unique visitors last month.

October 2009 Unique Visitors
Amazon's unique visitors metric in October was up 5.78% from the previous month and was up 12.9% year over year.

eBay's unique visitors metric in October 2009 was up less than 1% from the previous month and was up 3.61% year over year. This was eBay's first positive year-over-year increase in unique visitors since September 2007, but given that October 2008 unique visitors were at a 4-year low, it was an easy comp.

October 2009 Page Views
Amazon.com's page views metric was up 16.74% from the previous month and was up 40.38% year over year.

eBay's page views metric was up 6.25% in October from the previous month and was down 4.01% year over year.

What Will November Bring?
If the past two years are any indication, Amazon.com could be set to near eBay's peak traffic set back in December of 2006.

In order for eBay to have break-even traffic in November year-over-year, traffic would have to rise 8.72% from October 2009 to November 2009 - a tough target given October 2009 was up less than 1% from September 2009.

And the eBay board of directors continues to accept the Bull Ship from John Donahoe that eBay is on the right path.

I guess the correct path is the one that allows JD and his team to drag eBay down slowly and painfully.

Apparently the board is satisfied with his success in bringing eBay to a slow death.

While eBay had 50,992,000 unique visitors last month

Lets not forget that eBay has vastly more International hubs that all link into ebaycom...this is showing eBay really has hit the wall and sellers no longer view the place as cost effective
This is really the slippy slope once Xmas shoppers go

How sad that it has come to this. I loved eBay when I started, spent hours on it daily, learned to bid, to sell, to open a store. Now, it gives me pleasure to hear that eBay has continued its downward slide. Sadder still is that the downward slide was of its own doing at the hands of someone who threw away what he had only to find that he had killed the goose that laid the golden eggs.

Johnny Rotten says eBay continues to be the most viewed place in the world ? Is he telling a lie ? Are you Pinnochio now Johnny ?

Marriage is a good term, I used to love my spouse eBay, then when JD took over I have gotten sick of my eBay spouse, to the point where I am looking and working hard to get a complete divorce.

But a divorce when I find my way to walk. I guess Donablows doesn't need $15,000 to $20,000 a year from people like me, others are busting down the gates to replace and start their lucrative career selling on eBay !

I am tired of bening over for the soap for this CEO, it is going to stop, and when it does for me, I will bad mouth my ex-spouse to all I can for the treatment I was given for 2 years of Johnny Rotten

the simple fact is that ebay drove away thousands of sellers who listed the cool and unique stuff that drove traffic to the site. a previous poster noted that the people who paid 10k - 20k in fees yearly have been jettisoned in favor of buy dot com style cheap garbage drop shipped from manila,china, etc. that's true. i also agree with the previous poster re the ''divorce'' from ebay. it stopped being fun and profitable, so why continue? i feel the massive push from ebay corporate to make sellers do free shipping in order to increase the FVF fees on sellers who had to incorporate shipping expense into the initial starting bid / item cost was also a devastating blow. bad decision after bad decision and this once great ''community'' is now rapidly crumbling, at a time when it really could be thriving as shoppers search for value and ways to get more for their buck. lets face it if u need a TV or want to buy a big ticket item, ebay is not one of the first places ( or second, third or fourth) that buyers look! great blog ms. steiner, thanks for the chance to vent!!

Whats worse is the blind obstinace in continuing to race toward the cliff

Heres is what the management follies of '08 and '09 have cost the company :

As pretty much the whole world is aware the market for metals, gold and silver coins etc has EXPLODED ! Not to mention just about every other collectable as citizens scared to death about the dollar rush to invest in commodities

Just imagine if ebay really did provide a SAFE marketplace WITH REAL BUYER AND SELLER PROTECTION, with real dedicated FRAUD MONITORING, as well as allowing vetted sellers to accept any payment method they wished?

The traffic to the site would be beyond even the wildest dreams of any management team, ebay would be experiencing a second boom era and amazon would be so far in the background, it would be a joke !

Instead ebay continues to instill greater restraints, and force sellers to accept risky payment methods, while enabling buyer fraud..

Think about it, why would any sane coin or metals dealer post a multi-thousand dollar piece when they are forced to accept a easily reversible payment method?

Would any sane collectible dealer list their prime merchandise in a venue where buyer fraud is consider by the current management to be a ''cost of doing business''?

And it has nothing to do with the fees, Professional auction houses (whose business is BOOMING also charge substantial fees , but they protect the seller !

ebay has turned its back on the sellers of Tiffany lamps, and Kuggerands, and real works of art and instead embraced the vendors of cheap fake-tiques, gold''tribute'' coins and fake machine art from china. Does anyone consider this a good trade?
It seems rather then a real plan, ebay is desperately engaged in ''chicken chasing'' desperately racing back and forth and every witch way in a deseperate attempt to re-capture the magic they destroyed

Unless the Management s professional enough to admit their grand scheme is/was/and will be a dismal failure ,Ebay will go down in history as the company who abondoned success in deperate pursuit of failure.

In wrestling terminology, this is crash booking. They tried to hotshot a new champ on us "Paypal" we told them no, and now they are throwing anything they can at the wall & seeing what sticks. Hey JD, read the book about the death of WCW wrestling. They were beating the WWE & ultimately lost 50 million dollar company, sold to WWE for a few million a year later. You are doing the same thing to Ebay. Idiot.

I'd propose Amazon IS NOT an American company.

How many years did it run in the red? 10 perhaps, all the while slowly building its business. - Sounds Chinese or Japanese to me.

eBay however is definitely American. James Cagney "TOP OF THE WORLD, MA" as he blows up.....

Sorry for the metaphors.

I see eBay being spun off with JD holding on to PayPal etc. The only thing is whomever buys eBay will probably be forced to used PayPal.

If Amazon opens a "collectibles corner" - I'm gone off eBay. Unfortunately, they still have the eyeballs there.

For electronics & gadgets, I'd rather shop Amazon. I'm also a seller on Amazon.

It will be an interesting 6 months.
