eBay's Meg Whitman to Announce Governor Run Today

BettyConfidential.com reports that former eBay CEO Meg Whitman will announce today her long-rumored run for Governor of California. The Los Angles Times had reported as far back as January 2008 that Whitman, a republican, was considering a run in 2010.

Whitman was heavily involved in Republican Mitt Romney's recent presidential campaign and switched to John McCain's camp after Romney dropped out. Her name was bandied about as possible running mate to McCain, who ultimately picked Sarah Palin. Before McCain was defeated, he mentioned Whitman as a possible replacement for her friend Henry Paulson as Secretary of the Treasury.

When Whitman terminated her position in December as Special Advisor to eBay's CEO John Donahoe and stepped down from several corporate boards she was serving, it seemed certain she was readying for a run.

BettyConfidential.com reports she will make the announcement today on her website. Unfortunately for Meg, she was late in obtaining website domain names for a 2010 gubernatorial run and has been embroiled in a fight to get whitmanforgovernor.com, meg2010.com and whitman2010.com. We don't know which domain names were available to her by the time she went to purchase them.

Heck, she'll probably win. Everyone has already forgotten about anything that she did at eBay that was negative. I've even seen comments that say that they want Donahoe gone and her back!

She was a highly disliked CEO by many sellers whose fees not only built eBay but lined her money pit. She had a very low rating as CEO and many believe eBay would have been successful (or even more successful) without her.

Thankfully I dont live in Calif. Meg will screw it up worse than it is now and then hand it off to someone else like she did ebay. She needs to take all her money and buy a island somewhere and get out of our faces. She is one woman I wouldnt trust and cant stand to even look at.

I believe I read a news story where someone had gotten that website and Meg was suing claiming Cyber Squatting. If you google "whitman2010.com dispute" you will see she lost the suit. Maybe she ponied up the big bucks. It was updated Feb 3rd

This is actually a very good thing as Daisy said. There is nothing like a well publicized political campaign to bring up the crap and we all know eBay operates from the latrine. Meg cannot withstand the scrutiny.

It'll never happen. Cali won't vote another Republican governor, not after Ahnold and his failed promises to fix what Californians perceived as Grey Davis' mess. Cali's credit rating has sunk to the lowest in the nation and Meg will only be perceived as another very rich ex-CEO who received a huge golden parachute upon leaving who can't relate to the problems of the average resident. Meg, try for a state that doesn't already hate Republicans. A state not crippled by a budget so bad it has to hand out IOU's instead of tax refunds. You're not equipped to deal with their problems, neither was Arnold and frankly, experience is needed. Let somebody who knows what they're doing give it a go.

I live in California and I hope she is handed the very worst defeat of her life. I hope it costs her a bundle of that money she raked off the backs of ebay sellers! I can't imagine the ego there that thinks it is entitled, has the political smarts and has earned the opportunity to run for governor.

don't be so fast to dismiss this ex-ebat nitwit. Many people would vote for a ham sandwich because of a party affalation. She will lose if enough voters with at least half a brain come out and vote. Rememeber how republicants do whatever they can to suppress the vote.

IMO, she is an egomaniac. I agree wholeheartedly with Lisa that these spotlight hogs need to leave governance to those who actually have the skills and ability to govern. Running a for-profit corporation is not the same thing as running a government and for a populous state like CA, the stakes are much higher than they ever were for running ebay.

Why do so many of these former CEOs have such a god complex and lack integrity and basic human decency?

You don't have to like her as a person, but don't confuse Arnold with an actual Republican. He is not a fiscal conservative. This is exactly what Cali needs. The problem with most government officials is they refuse to run things like a business. Can you ever imagine running a company without balancing the books? Not to mention the fact that Cali continues to run businesses out of the state via tax rates and enviro-laws. Overtaxing business and don't balance your books leads to Cali '09. The rest of the country will be a reflection of the state in another 4 years.
