Perminate Link for What Do You Think of eBay's Third-Party Checkout?   What Do You Think of eBay's Third-Party Checkout?

Buyers are complaining about eBay's third-party checkout system, and complain they provide a bad buying experience. See the full story in today's AuctionBytes Newsflash.

Shoppers report error messages, links to seller's off-eBay website, being charged for shipping on listings that offered free-shipping, and that there are no clear links back to eBay after they have completed the transaction on the third-party checkout.

eBay has been working on a shopping cart so shoppers can purchase multiple items from multiple sellers, and this month eBay announced it was testing a "shopping basket" in the UK. It seems certain a unified shopping cart would mean the end of third-party checkout systems, but in the meantime, some shoppers are clearly frustrated.

What do you think? As a seller, do you use a third-party checkout system from your eBay management tool? And as a buyer, have you been forced to go through a 3P checkout for any recent eBay purchases? How was the experience?

I am both a seller and a buyer on eBay.  As a seller, I do not use a 3rd party checkout.  As a buyer, I LOATHE 3rd party checkout.  It makes buying more time-consuming and glitchy for the buyer, and is generally a nuisance.  I hope that eBay will discontinue 3rd party checkouts off-site.

Ina not only did over 1700 people get charged for shipping on that Daily Deal fiasco but Ebay management needs to know about the communication issue with this seller.

The Ebay listing gave an email address for customer service issues. When you emailed the seller at that exact address you were sent an auto email with a clickable link. That clickable link took to your page where you were required to register including name, address, Ebay ID etc. Then another email was sent to you with a link where you could write out your concern/issue again. Have I the Ebay buyer jumped through enough hoops yet for this seller? This is providing me with a great buying experience? Ebay needs to #1 stop requiring buyers to use 3P checkouts. #2 require that all communication go through Ebay's system and not through unmonitored private systems. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

I hate being forced to use Paypal. I like being allowed to use checkouts like Kyozou since it's really fast. I don't get spammed by them. Channel Advisor however has ads for their 3rd party checkout and takes you places that you would not want to go, forces you then emails you, but I think ebay owns part of them so they need to look in their own backyard. I think ebay has to differentiate between GOOD and BAD 3rd party checkout just like they suppposedly differentiate between good and bad sellers. I guess they want to blame their falling numbers on 3rd party checkout now!

As a buyer I HATE third party checkout. It’s not just the inconvenience, unfamiliarity, and the links outside of eBay but I don't trust them. Will generally stay clear of any third party checkout.

In reference to: ''Buyers say they have no way of knowing if an item requires third-party checkout before purchasing'' this is not always correct. Every single one of my eBay ads state ''No Whacky 3rd Party Shopping Cart''. I added this after buying from a seller that used the third party cart to add mandatory insurance that was not configured in the ad.

Third seller checkout is a drain on CPU resourses as well. Most drop a ''cookie'' into your browser which serves to slow down your CPU. I had one try and drop a virus.

Many 3rd party checkouts use an ''opt-out'' email newsletter program that results in you getting more emails you do not want.

Some sell your email addresses to other venues.

Once I ID a 3rd party seller, I never buy from them again. I keep a list next to my CPU so that my $5,000 worth of buying per month that I do does not go to them.

As they say, only money talks........

I've bought many daily deals and gone through many checkouts. Only once did I have aproblem and it was with PayPal hanging up. Most likely the complaining seller just did something wrong

If I see any sign that the seller is going to be using a 3rd party checkout, I back-button so fast my RAM smokes.

3rd party checkouts = SPAM, mailing list harassment's, upsell hell, redundant forms,
and undisclosed information harvesting.
Of course, eBay does most of that crap too, but I expect it if I'm going to shop there.

Much as I hate to abet an eBay monopoly on the payment system, I would actually welcome a common checkout (ex: Amazon).

It would be nice if ebay would just have a regular Cart, and the buyer could chose their own method of payment. But I doubt if that's going to happen.

My husband bought an item this weekend and could not even pay for it due to third party check out. He could not find the seller's email address anywhere to pay ''manually'' with PayPal. He finally looked up the seller contact info to get his phone number, but still has not been able to pay.
I have been through the endless loop of trying to pay with 3rd party check-outs and usually end up paying manually with PayPal. Then the seller misses the payment & has to be reminded you have paid. I'm sure many sellers get bad feedback for this reason because they rely on the 3rd party notification that a buyer has paid.
Please eBay, do away with third party checkout ASAP!

I dumped horrible 3rd party after to many complaints form buyers.
Giving to much info, no combined shipping, trying to upcharge shipping, to much runaround.

I also strongly believe that eBay is deliberately and purposely causing small sellers to go out of business by failing to show their listings

I would never knowingly buy using Channel ASSvisor.

Way to many negative issues. Every time I get stuck with CA, I tell the seller that they are losing business because C A sucks so bad.

Lets see...big seller like eforcity that uses 3P checkout has 2 million + positive feedbacks.

This comment string has a handful of whiners posting on a site known as a place for whiners to come and whine about their complaint du jour

I think the checkout you are whining about must be pretty good, where do I signup

@Kenny the buyer- sorry to disappoint you but here's the seller's response admitting it was a glitch within HIS system. Pretty typical to try and blame the buyer for glitchy 3p seller software.

''Response (Jxxxx) - 07/25/2010 03:53 PM
Greetings
It was a glitch in the system but it has now been corrected.  I am very sorry for that & although we do try to be perfect from time to time mistakes do happen.  When they happen we move quickly to fix them ASAP, which is what we did with this matter.  We will be processing a refund for your shipping charges that you shouldn't of been charged for.  If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Thank you for shopping with us & have a great day.

Cheers''

The only mistake this buyer made was purchasing an Ebay Daily Deal. 3P checkouts need to stop or there will be no more Daily Deals. Already canceled the email updates until Ebay responds.

So there was a glitch in the sellers setup that was responded to and corrected and that means all 3rd party checkouts are horrible. Sounds like great customer service that your problem was fixed promptly. Who was this seller I want to put them on my favorites list.

Ever wonder why 3 year old and otherwise old articles mysteriously get commented on here?

It's because the psy ops operations at LieWorld want to divert attention away from comments in a recent blog -- normally comments that contain useful information about how to strike back at the San Jose Empire.

It happened again yesterday, and you can see the LieWorld folks are here again en masse this morning or one schozphrenic individual posting as several.

So here it is again, LieWorld.

This is as good a thread as any to mention that DONahoe's comments about attritional elimination of seller discounts in Q2 constitutes a clear cut case of bait and switch.

Ebay baits sellers with promises of discounts in exchange for outstanding customer service.

They then set the bar so high that few sellers can earn those discounts.

When more sellers than anticipated did earn discounts, ebay raised the bar again for the express purpose of reducing the number of sellers eligible for discounts and to reduce the discount percentage of those sellers still qualified.

Better buyer experience? Apparently not. Buyers are still leaving ebay in record numbers.

Bait and switch -- it's ILLEGAL.

Report this sleazy bait and switch scam to your state's attorney general's office!

And don't let LieWorld lies about ebay lies inlfuence your thinking.

Shove it, LieWorld.

Funny... I was just thinking about this last night. Why do you need my name, address, city, state, zip, phone, email when it's already transmitted to you via PP? I was thinking the next time I want to purchase something quick, and was forced to go through all these hoops, I would tell the seller I want to cancel and specifically mention why.

But I must say, the ease of avoiding PP is about the only positive aspect of this.

How exactly has my problem been addressed? They still have my money. Nothing has changed except I got an email admitting they screwed up. YIPPEE!!

No Ebayer should EVER be forced to checkout with these 3P checkouts.  Many aren't set up properly, some default to shipping fees and terms not matching the Ebay listing. Big links to the seller's website are available to upsell. None of which improves my buying experience on Ebay. Ebay needs to step up and say buyers come first. If a buyer wants to check out with Paypal they should be allowed to do so. 3P checkouts make a sellers job easier it does nothing to improve the buyer's experience.

Appears to be an organized push from within ebay to get rid of 3PXO (do they have someone exclusively on staff to think up these acronyms?). Griff casts out in the waters of facebook for opinion. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/ebaygriff
